Dr.
Walter Peters received his MD degree with Honors, and his
Plastic Surgery Fellowship (FRCSC), both from the University
of Toronto. He received his PhD from UBC. Subsequently, he
was awarded a McLaughlin Traveling Fellowship for further
training in Boston.
Dr.
Peters has had a Plastic Surgery practice in Toronto for over
20 years. He is also Full Professor of Plastic Surgery
at the University of Toronto. He is currently on staff at
Mount Sinai Hospital. However, all of his surgery is now done
in his own surgical facility, at Bloor and Sherbourne, in
downtown Toronto. Surgery is
done under general anaesthetic, IV (twilight) sedation, and
local anaesthetic. Patients
can stay at the Clarion Hotel, which is located across the street from our surgical facility.
Dr.
Walter Peters has been awarded over $5 million in research
funding. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers and
book chapters, and has presented papers at over 300 national
and international meetings. Dr.
Peters has received numerous awards for his research studies,
including the Lister Prize for surgical research at the international
level, the Ralph Millard Prize, the Tiffany Prize, and the Mentor Prize.
Since
1990, Dr. Peters has been the Coordinator
and Course Director of the largest Annual Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery Symposium in Canada. Each year, over
250 plastic surgery professionals attend this University of
Toronto meeting, from Canada, the United States, and abroad.
For
the past 10 years, Dr. Peters has been the chief investigator
of a huge, $3.5 million, 3,000 patient research study, on
the reaction of a woman’s body to silicone gel breast
implants. Dr. Peters is also an advisor/consultant in the
United States, to the FDA, the National Academy of Sciences,
the Institute of Medicine Committee on the “Safety of
Breast Implants”, and the FDA Public Health Project.
He has also been a consultant to six major corporations in
the United States. In Canada, he is a member of Health Canada’s
Expert Panel on Breast Implants and the Scientific Advisory
Board.
